RC surgery with a twist

Update on my surgery
I had my RC on 12/12 was released on 12/18. I have been moving forward since day one.
I had the normal bladder, prostate, lymph nodes and both ureters removed. It was more complicated than expected. The radiation that I had really messed up the nerves by the bladder. The reason why I had so much pain after the 30 treatments was just realized. I had my new ureters made from the small intestines. Upon waking up I found out that my doctor did a double shotgun stoma. Yep I have two stoma’s but one bag. So far all is doing good.
I have been on this site for a while getting ready for my surgery. The exhaustion is real. I have had no pain at all since the day after surgery. Only Tylenol is what I have taken.

Trying to sleep with the night bag is no problem thinking it will over flow is. Setting the alarm for four hour checks and emptying the bag messes with my sleep. Anyone have a trick to be able to sleep through the night?

Once again I am so happy that I found this site. The moderators are phenomenal. The people on this site are always willing to help with any questions. Because of all of you I was prepared to fight this disease.

Please pray that my lymph nodes come back clean.

  1. It sounds like you are doing really great for being so soon out of surgery, but I am confused by your description of the double shotgun stoma? I think perhaps you mean a double-barrel stoma? Does the term ureterostomy sound familiar to you? 2 stomas right next to each other? It's hard to say without seeing your stoma or knowing more about your surgery. But I'm glad you are no longer in pain! These stomas (there are 2 next to each other) can be challenging to pouch due to the size/shape but I would definitely suggest a moldable product from Hollister or ConvaTec.

    1. yes you are correct I left out the barrel part in my post. So far no problem with pouching

    2. great to hear your pouches are working out. Go you! Great progress. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

  2. hi there. Thanks so much for updating us. I was thinking about you and how you got on. That was good to get home and start your recovery properly there. I am sure it was a bit of a surprise to wake up with a combined bag. Good they managed to make it one. I have two bags as a result of bladder cancer. I knew that would happen before surgery. So impressed you are strong enough to share your update with us. We are here at any step to support you. I know some people with an ileostomy (like a colostomy but made from small intestine) and you can get extra legs capacity both bags and night bags. This may help you with the time between emptying in the night. Take care. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    1. I use a 2 piece Coloplast appliance and a Coloplast night bag.

      1. @Spomes55 - I use the Coloplast Conveen 21356 night bag and it holds 2000Ml which in my humble opinion should be more than enough to get you through the night. I empty all but a little bit prior to going to bed. I empty the little bit that is left in my bag into the night bag just after hooking it up to ensure that it is working properly. I go to bed at 10 and get up about 6 or 630 and have 1/2 full night bag in the morning. You must be drinking a great amount prior to bed or have some other reason that might require a larger night bag. I have never filled up my night bag in over 8 years with a urostomy. Hope that you can figure it out soon. Keep us posted. Linda Urbanski ( moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

      2. I use a different nigh bag but work with a similar solution. I sleep well and don't have any issues with my night bag either. I really cherish the whole night's sleep I get now. I can go a full 8 hours without getting up. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net
