My Experience with the After Effects of BCG

In late May of 2018, I experienced copious blood in my toilet during a usual morning void. I learned quickly this was to be hematuria.

That led to my diagnosis

An immediate call to my urologist began a series of tests: blood, urine, 6 cystoscopies, etc. This graduated to a full-blown TURBT operation (several days in the hospital), followed by a series of BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) procedures. The result: carcinoma in situ of the bladder.

Dealing with some side effects

The carcinoma was cleansed from the bladder as reported by my urologist. However, the BCG procedures did a number on my urinary tract (urethra). Two urine cultures ruled out any infection. What followed was constant pain in my urinary tract. I tried AZO, later changed to Pyridium (Dr. Rx), but these were discontinued due to possible effects to my kidneys.

Have you ever experienced pain down there?

My question: I would like to hear from anyone who may have experienced similar pain and discomfort in their urethra area. If so, what pain reliever they may have discovered. Thank you…

Hi Don, thank you for sharing your story. I’m so sorry for your diagnosis and your pain. I am in my 4th week of BCG treatments. I have not felt anything like you felt so I can’t imagine what you have gone through. I have only experienced fatigue and body aches, which my doctor told me to take Advil for. I hope you have found relief by the time you receive my note. Good luck to you, Don, and my thoughts and prayers are with you. Take care.

Hi @donlac, thank you for sharing your story. I’m sorry to hear you’ve been dealing with pain after all the BCG treatments. That’s pretty frustrating to have constant pain. After discontinuing the AZO and Pyridium, did your doctor offer any advice for long term management? It is always best to discuss possible treatment options with your doctor. I do hope others in the community may chime in to add similar experiences. Take care and keep in touch. -Sarah ( Team Member)
