What are alternative treatments to BCG?

Just recently I tried to start my second series of BCG treatments (6 sessions). I had a severe reaction on my first session so my future 5 sessions were cancelled. I have Invasive, aggressive high grade carcinoma in-situ (pathology said Stage 3). I am due to have another cystoscopy early August.

I was wondering what could/would be my alternate treatment if I can't tolerate BCG. Why do some people have chemotherapy? Keytruda? Is BCG the first step to go down? Just wondering, thank you in advance.

  1. - We are not medical professionals and therefore cannot dispense medical advice but BCG is usually for non invasive BC. I do know people who have tried Keytruda and of course chemo is used widely. What is your current update?

    1. Hi Linda, my last scope showed something fibrous which I then had removed and biopsied which came back benign. Thank goodness. Have to have another scope in four months time. I have been having cystoscopies every 3 months for the past 2 1/2 years. 5 TURBT's during this time with removal of tumours. I am not sure what my treatment will be next time if my cancer comes back as I can't have BCG. At the moment it looks like the first round of six sessions of BCG is going ok.

      1. thanks for updating us. Glad the BCG is going well and I hope there is adequate available for as long as you need it. Let us know how you go. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    2. I have had NIBC for 2. 1/2 yrs. I was taking BCG at first but I had a bad reaction. I am currently on Docetaxel and gencitabine for the last 18 months with no side effects. It has been very effective and my doctor in NY has treated a number of pts with success

      1. @Justruss70 - Thank you for sharing your experience. Different treatments work for different people. Also patients seem to have a variety of side effects while some have none. I am happy to hear that you found something that work for you. My best. Linda ( moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

    3. I am curious about your treatments with gemcitabine, and so happy that it's been effective for you. Do you get intravesical installations with the two drugs and if so, how frequently? Do you also get cystoscopies regularly? After two turbts, I am set to begin a six week program of gemcitabine and am anxious, but hopeful, as it seems to be well tolerated.

      1. been thinking of you and wishing you well with the treatment. Take care. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net
