Brown ring around stoma

It's been about 6 weeks since my surgery. Today when I change my pouch I notice a brown ring on my skin around my stoma. Iam also having skin irritation where the adhesives stick.

  1. hi there. Firstly congratulations in getting to six weeks post surgery. I know that’s a tough time. Things will start to get easier but of course still some recovery to go. Sounds like the ring on your skin is just where your stoma/Ostomy bag has been sitting. How long have you had your bag on? Perhaps trying changing it a little sooner. For the skin irritation. You could try different bags. You could be allergic to the specific bag. You could also try a barrier spray or wipe to put on your skin before the bag to try and protect in. Here anytime to support you if we can. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    1. @Casmiley1000 - It is common to have some issues until you figure out which wafer works best and how long you can keep it on, Just because you do not have leaks doesn't mean that it is good for your skin. Sime people can go longer without skin issues and other cannot. I do not know how long your wafer was on but possibly trying a shorter time may help. Also make sure that you are pressing down on your skin to remove the wafer and not just pulling it off. You also may have some residual soap etc that has gathered or a bit of urine that snuck under there and caused the irritation. A great product to try between changes is Stomagienics. Check out their website and call for samples. Good luck and let us know how you are doing. My best Linda Urbanski ( moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)
