Hernias

How far can you exercise without putting yourself in the hernia catergory. After six months post op. 😁

  1. - I am not a medical professional but advise finding a hernia belt that is comfortable and supports the bag and your abdomen prior to much exercise. We are all susceptible to getting a hernia and I do not know that we can entire prevent one but belts seem to help. What kind of exercises are you doing that are of concern? I walk, bike, swim and use some simple equipment at the guy but stay away from much in the way of lifting. If you have concerns I would suggest asking your doctor about specific exercises. My best to you. Linda Urbanski (moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

    1. i am not massively in to sport. I only really walk or swim. I would recommend for anything more strenuous, look to get a support garment like a belt of vest. I wear support underwear all the time. (I have two ostomies) and the start of a hernia behind my colostomy. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

      1. It can be difficult for nurses to commit to giving advice on situations like these. A belt will definitely help, but we always advise speaking to a member of your medical team before making any big changes to your diet or exercise regime, especially following surgery. They may even be able to provide some physio options to strengthen your weakened leg, too!

      2. hey. That sounds like a good idea. Let you know how you go with the belt. Sometimes it is definitely better to listen to you own body. I think also medical teams are sometime reluctant in case their advise does us harm but it shouldn’t be that way. I have had swelling on my right leg and foot since surgery. 2. Had a fitting for the belt so going ahead with that. Having an XRAY on hip. Just to see what's gong on. I feel it has something to do with my back as well. The nurse did say wear the belt as much as possible. 😁 Upward and onward.

      1. I think you will find that a hernia belt is very beneficial and once you find one that is the most comfortable for you, it is second nature to put it on when needed or daily. I use a Nu-Hope belt and it has been a great supportive tool for my urostomy for years. I hope that the one you choose works out well for you.
