Necrosis found

I recently had a cystoscopy performed 3 months after the removal of a low grade non muscle invasive tumour. This cystoscopy has found that a new tumour has appeared and also apparently some necrosis on the site of the original tumour. What is the significance of the necrosis is it something I should be particularly worried about.

  1. - I am not a medical professional and so am not familiar with what would cause this but suggest discussing it with your doctor to see what her or she says. Were you given this information on a patient portal or did your doctor tell you that you have a reoccurrence and some necrosis? I would like to think if it was a concern that the doctor would mention that when you were provided your results unless it was not done in person. I am sorry that you have a new tumor and hope that you can have successful treatment to remove it and be NED - no evidence of disease. Please keep us updated on how you are doing and what you find out and if it is a concern. My best to you. Linda Urbanski (moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

    1. thank you for your update. Obviously, recurrence is something none of us want to hear about. I'm sorry you are experiencing it. I am also not a medically trained oncologist, just a nerdy caregiver. Here is my understanding of your inquiry:

Necrosis is the death of cells of an organ or tissue, usually due to disease, injury, or failure of blood supply.

How was your initial tumor removed? Injury may have been caused to the tissue around the tumor as a result of TURBT. Ironically, cancer cells are cells whose programmed cell-death malfunctions and causes uninhibited growth. You are exhibiting cells that are dying.

I would ask your medical team if this is normal to see after your procedures. I would also ask if that is an indicator that cancer cells were missed the first time, which may have since caused injury to the tissue around the old tumor. I would also ask for scenarios in which this type of necrosis would be witnessed. Be sure you are satisfied with the answers you hear, and always feel free to use our community as a sounding board.

Praying for miraculous ease and recovery for you! All my best, Charles (Moderator / BladderCancer.net)

      1. Thanks for your helpful reply. I am in the UK and in the almost unbelievable situation of having been diagnosed with bladder cancer had the cancer removed via TURBT and after a further cystoscopy 3 months later it has been found that I have a new tumour and either a second new tumour or necrosis in the site of the original tumour and have yet to speak with any consultant/oncologist. I am awaiting date for another TURBT to establish the situation .
All dialogue has been via routine mail informing me of results and next course of action. My many questions are being answered via Dr Google and helpful forums such as this. No one to one dialogue with any health specialist whatsoever. Sadly this is the current state of the NHS in the area that I stay

        1. hi. I am in the UK (Scotland) so if I can give any support with the NHS, just ask. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

        2. @James 1 - I am sorry to hear that the communication is by mail versus in person or by video chat or phone call. I live in the US and though I am able to access my test results, appointments and office notes etc online, but test results and anything of concern at all are always personally discussed with me prior to being posted on my private portal. It is very disappointing to hear that you are not provided that level of communication also. Do you need to make an appointment to speak with someone or can you just call in to someone to ask questions? I hope that you have some answers soon as we all know that DR Google is not always the best place for accurate information. Please keep us updated on what you find out and know that we are always here to provide support My best Linda Urbanski (moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)
