Raw Skin around Stoma

Following diagnosis of bladder cancer I had an ileal conduit in June
2011. During the last couple of years the skin around my stoma has
become red, raw & bloody in some places. My stoma nurse suggested
using stoma powder, and other suggestions have been calamine lotion
or barrier cream. Non of these remedies have made any difference.
I think the problem may be that I use a convex stoma bag which rubs
the skin too much. Maybe I should switch to a flat bag but I would be grateful for any advice re. healing the skin around the stoma. Thank you.

  1. - I suggest that you reach out to Colplast and Hollister with your issue and they will send you some samples to try. It may not be the convex but that you can not use that particular brand or style any more. On the rare occasions that I have had issues with red areas I put on my wafer and bag and run some neosporin around the edge between the stoma and wafer inside edge. It seems to help. I also suggest giving your stoma a break and putting some neosporin on the skin for a bit. Also reach out to Stomagienics for samples of their products or just ordering some. You can see them on their website.

You can place this product over your stoma while you are changing your wafer or just when you are taking a break without the bag. You will have to hold it in place but it will absorb any of the urine while the bag is off. I hope that some of these suggestions will help out. I definitely would call for samples and suggestions right away. You will find that they are very willing to help out. Keep us updated on how things are going and I hope that you find a resolution soon. My best Linda Urbanski (moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

    1. hi. I have two stomas. Around my urostomy I have had skins issues off and on over the almost 6 years since I got my stomas. There are a few things I can recommend. Barrier rings which would cover the area and protect the skin. You can get flat or convex rings to use with a convex bag. You can get a barrier spray to spray on before the bag to protect tht skin. I don’t know where you are but in the UK - germolene works well to heal your skin and allows the bag still to seal well.
