Remembering Curtis Garbett

We are incredibly saddened to share that BladderCancer.net team member Curtis Garbett passed away on February 27, 2021. Curtis had been living with stage IV bladder cancer since February 2015. He will be remembered, and missed, by all who knew him. His legacy and passion for bladder cancer advocacy continues through his organization, Crush It For Curtis Foundation (CIFCF).

Read more about Curtis and join us in remembering him by sharing memories below.

  1. I first met Curtis at the HU conference in 2019 and then chatted with him in one of the HU Fireside chats since COVID started. I was impressed by his willingness to do so much advocacy while simultaneously dealing with advanced disease.

I am so saddened to hear of his passing. He was far too young. He could have chosen many ways to spend his time since his diagnosis and he opted to devote his time to educating others about bladder cancer.

Huge strides have been made in treating this disease - especially metastatic disease - since I lost my first husband to it in 2014. But Curtis' death reminds us that there is a long way to go. We have far more options with immunotherapies and combos of them with chemotherapy than existed just several years ago. But still, everyday, people die from bladder cancer.

Curtis did what he could to inform the world. It is incumbent upon those of us left behind to carry on his work and be a voice for his message since he no longer can voice it himself. I send my deepest condolences to his family and wish them some sense of peace.

    1. Thank you for sharing these memories with us. Those two times meeting at Connexion and our Fireside chat are ones I hold near to me, too. Curtis contributed a great deal to bladder cancer awareness and research despite all difficulty he faced. His life touched so many people. His family and friends are in my thoughts. -Sarah (BladderCancer.net Team Member)
