I first met Curtis at the HU conference in 2019 and then chatted with him in one of the HU Fireside chats since COVID started. I was impressed by his willingness to do so much advocacy while simultaneously dealing with advanced disease.
I am so saddened to hear of his passing. He was far too young. He could have chosen many ways to spend his time since his diagnosis and he opted to devote his time to educating others about bladder cancer.
Huge strides have been made in treating this disease - especially metastatic disease - since I lost my first husband to it in 2014. But Curtis' death reminds us that there is a long way to go. We have far more options with immunotherapies and combos of them with chemotherapy than existed just several years ago. But still, everyday, people die from bladder cancer.
Curtis did what he could to inform the world. It is incumbent upon those of us left behind to carry on his work and be a voice for his message since he no longer can voice it himself. I send my deepest condolences to his family and wish them some sense of peace.
