Spray adhesive remover

How many cans do you use per month? How many does your insurance provide?

I only received 1 can with my 1 month supply of products. That just doesn't seem like enough.

  1. sorry I am in the UK. We have a national health service. We get a prescription of 1 removal spray per box of
Bags. I think the US insurance system is stricter. can you advise? Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    1. @Stuyoung - It is not that the US is restrictive, but in my opinion workers comp is the reason that you cannot get more. My suggestion is to have the doctor who sees you write that you need more. I would think that should take care of it. To be honest I use nothing but the bag and wafer. I found that in the beginning the nurse sent powder, adhesive removes, ring to have the wafer fit better etc. As time went on I found that I did not need any of those things and get along fine without them. I am able to remove and left over adhesive in the shower. Hope that this helps. Linda Urbanski (moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

      1. I guess it depends on individual bags. I can’t remove either my colostomy or urostomy bags without adhesive spray or it would hurt my skin. I get 8 sprays a month for two ostomies in the UK. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

      2. @Stuyoung09 - To answer your question, I change every 6 or 7 days. I press on my skin and slowly pull the wafer away from my skin. Those who change often find that they have more often skin irritation due to that and may use an adhesive remover. I used it in the beginning but have not needed it in years. If it works for you, I would not change anything but suggest having your doctor request more with a script. From what I remember of the can of this, I would think they would last through a month but maybe like everything else we buy, the amount is smaller. It also might be a consideration to see if there is anything you can buy over the counter inexpensively or be reimbursed if possible. Hope that this helps. Please reach out anytime. 2. I've asked the question on other forums as well. It seems people get at least a month but up to 30 changes on a single can.
I changed this morning and was more deliberate and frugal with the spray. It really does take much. I think I can make a can last 10 to 15 changes. That should cover me for a month.

      1. @Stuyoung09 - I recall vaguely the can that I had when I first had my surgery and am wondering ( as I tend to do sometimes) if like everything else these days, the cans contain smaller amounts of the adhesive remover. Seems the quantity of may items we bought not long ago has been noticeably reduced. Happy to hear that you have have figured out how to stretch each can longer. My best to you. 3. I'm sorry you are needing more than the allotted amount of adhesive remover sprays. Medicare allows for a 2 oz can per month, a little less than 1 can (1.7 oz or 50 ml), or 75 wipes per 90 days which is a little more than 1 wipe per barrier change if you changed every other day. Crazy isn't it how the government comes up with these numbers? But they are getting better, years ago, they only allowed 10 bags per month! I don't believe the spray cans are calibrated to calculate the number of sprays since everybody sprays differently. If you need more than the allowed amount you will have to pay out of pocket. I would suggest looking into purchasing these extra items from another supplier other than your usual Medicare supplier for better pricing. Parthenon Inc and Medical Monks have excellent prices on ostomy supplies, and then there is also Amazon. Shop around if you need more. Anita Nurse/moderator/bladdercancer.net
