Urostomy difficulties

Has anyone using leg bag for daily activities...bcoz my mom is forgetting to emptying the urostomy pouch...is it better to use leg bag for day time??? Can anyone suggest me in this

  1. - One of the downsides of having your bladder removed is that we no longer have the notice that you need to pee. If she is forgetting I also suggest setting an alarm on her phone or otherwise. A leg bag would work and would allow her to go longer but she still would need to determine she needs to empty. Normally the budge of the bag after a while is a great indicator that is it time to empty. It is a learning curve and she will eventually get it. Possibly planning to empty every couple hours would help also. Hope that this helps. Linda Urbanski (moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

    1. thank you

  2. Hi. I don’t use one daily but I use for longer automobile journeys or plane journeys. I also recently have started using for theatre or longer hairdresser appointments. The reason I do this is for these thighs, it is like I might be ok or might need to empty so it puts me at ease to know I have extra capacity. I prefer that ones which sit on my thigh rather than calf. I think using daily would help. Some extra time between emptying. Also she would more likely be aware it needs emptying. Like Linda said, setting a phone timer to remind her would also be a good idea. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

  3. after radical cystectomy with ileal Conduit, can my mom sleep on her side??? Bcoz she is sleeping on her back always...she is getting back pain... could you please suggest me on this

    1. I found that once I was healed I was able to sleep any way I want. I am not a back sleeper and usually side and sometimes stomach sleeper works best for me. I assume that she uses a night bag which would allow her to sleep through the night without getting up to empty her bag. Why is she only sleeping on her back? Is it because she is concerned about the bag coming off or leaking or due to how recently she had her surgery? Either is a common concern. I have not had issues at all and I know that many others sleep on their stomach or side. I assume that your mother is not yet comfortable trying out a new position but suggest if she takes a nap or short rest to try it out. I also suggest a waterproof pad underneath her in case there is a leak and to make her more confident. I hope that this helps out. Keep us updated on how things go. My best to you. 2. hi. For the first 3 months or so I had to sleep on my back, initially actually sitting up. This was for two reasons. Firstly as was told not to lie on my stomas (I have 2)’but the main reason was because it was uncomfortable and I had many wounds from drains etc that were healing. After that I gradually started changing positions and was fine. As I got more towards lying on my stomach, it did cause some bag leaks as I was pressing against the Ostomy bag and it wasn’t letting it drain into the night bag so now I lie against a full length booster cushion and that has solved the problem. Hope this is useful. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

  4. she had surgery three months back...can she try new position now???

    1. I am not a medical professional but know that I was sleeping on my side within a couple months. I suggest a pad underneath just in case of a leak but I think she will be fine. I sleep by the left side of the bed. I place the hose of the night bag under my left leg and place the bag in a wastebasket. I have not had any problems sleeping on my side and switching to the other side by rolling over on my back to get to there. I hope that this helps out an that your mother can have a good nights sleep without back pain, Wishing you both well. Let me know how things work out. 2. from my side, I am not medically trained and everyone heals at different speeds but it was around the 3 month mark, I was able to try different sleeping positions. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net
