Do I really need my bladder removed

I was diagnosed a year and a half ago with non invasive bladder cancer, the surgeon stated immediately after the Tumors were removed I would need my bladder removed. I have had 6 then 3 sessions of BCG which didn’t stop the return of Tumors but I had 2 further removals of single Tumors non invasive now they are planning to remove my bladder as I have again a single non invasive Tumor. At the beginning they told me the bcg would be 3 monthly intervals but it took six months between the 6 and the 3 sessions could this make any difference?? They want to remove my bladder urgently now before the next 3 monthly sysoscopy I feel it’s a money saving excercise
I am so emotionally disturbed it’s eating away at me and I am normally so strong in character
Furthermore I have a new relationship and it’s so hard to know I will not be able to be sexually active anymore this whole thing is pushing me over the edge !!

  1. @grant64 - First of all - this is your decision so take the time you need. I am not a medical professional and cannot provide medical advice but if it were me, I would seek out another doctor for a second opinion. As the tumors continue to return your doctor may be concerned that you will move from non invasive to invasive and thinking that an aggressive treatment may prevent this. You certainly can look into other options for treatment to see if that would be a possibility. As you may know, BCG does not work for everyone and some have found other options following that.

I would also discuss the depth of the surgery should you decide to move forward and see if you would be able to be sexually active. I had RC/IC in 2014 at the age of 63. For me I wanted to get rid of the cancer so I did not choose other options to try first. But that was me and it now how everyone should proceed. Take a breath, do some research but do not over do it. I feel confident that others will add comments who have make other choices than RC. I wish you the very best in finding a treatment that works for you. 1. hi. Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time right now. I no am not medically trained to comment on any impact of the spacing between treatment unfortunately but I would certainly raise as a concern with your doctor. I know it’s on the past but I always find getting answers helps with dealing with the whole situation. I think it’s worth a second opinion. I would also ask your concern doctor the reason he feels it is the right time to consider the bladder removal. Perhaps there are concerns it may advance without.
They should be explained exactly why they are recommending it and Proving you with alternatives and options if there are some to give you a choice. Ultimately you of course are the only one would can give consent to the bladder removal. I hope you get some answers. Wishing you well and let us know how you get on. 1. I don't know if this is of any assistance, but my bladder cancer was diagnosed 11/2021, unfortunately even though it was non evasive, it was grade 3 cancer, highly likely to come back at some point. On this basis I had a complete bladder, prostate and nymph gland removal a few weeks ago. If your cancer is not of a high grade, or growing out of your bladder, then I would seek a second opinion, regular camera checks/TURBT may be enough to keep an eye on your situation.
        Good luck
        Paul

        1. @grant64 - I understand your hesitation. Surgery is not something that you take lightly or without all the needed information. Having a good relationship with your doctor and trusting them literally with your life at times is so important. Have you had a second opinion or looked into other possibly treatments versus RC? Hopefully others who have not had RC and are the same grade as you will chime in. Keep us posted and hoping that you are able to have some answers soon. Thanks Laura my biggest issue is I have had only BCG option I was advised before any treatment that they would have to remove.. last turbt was June they want to remove this month before my next cystoscopy I just feel like it’s not my health they are concerned about it sounds more like a money saving excercise
I have had 1 meeting with a surgeon to explain in 2 years that’s was 2 months ago to make a date to remove !! All my answers I have had from internet and I’m more confused now than ever .. I have refused preop and asked for consultation which I have tomorrow .. I will see what answers I get tomorrow

        1. it definitely seems like not all
options have been explored or discussed with you. Even if certain treatments aren’t suitable for you, they should explain why. Hope your consultation went well today and you got some more answers. Thinking of you. Let us know how you got on. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net
