Mother newly diagnosed

Hi all

My mother is 86 and was just found to have a small lesion on her bladder in a ct scan that they strongly suspect to be cancer. She has bloodwork including a urine sample done yearly and her recent results (May, and repeated twice in June) showed microscopic blood in her urine. The ct scan had actually been ordered because of something unrelated. We're currently waiting to hear from a urologist.

At the moment we dont know a whole lot other than its small and probably hasnt been there long. Mostly im wondering people's experiences with people in the over 80s group and treatment options. Thank you

  1. @Larla77 - I am not in my 80's but not far from it. I am not a medical professional and therefore cannot provide medical advice. I do know others who have been diagnosed in various stages of bladder cancer in their late 70's and 80's. Treatment options are based on the stage and grade of the cancer and also taking into consideration the general health of the patient. I suggest taking this one step at a time and see what the urologist suggests. A cystoscopy and TURBT are common tests that are done to determine if there is cancer and if so, the stage and grade. I also would not over do the internet research but list any questions and concerns and present them to the doctor to help with clarification. Please keep us updated and know that you and your mother are in our thoughts and prayers. Linda Urbanski ( moderator, bladder cancer.net team member)

    1. thank you for the reply. Definitely not overdoing any research as we dont know what we're dealing with. Thankfully she's in good overall health. My dad passed away from esophageal cancer in 1994 (and had stomach cancer in 1983) so this is definitely triggering for us. One step at a time.

    2. @Larla77 - I am happy to hear that your mother's general health is good. Also just having you be supportive and so vigilant is good. Hopefully you will have answers soon from the urologist. Please keep us updated. My best Linda Urbanski ( moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

  2. hi. These days, mostly they don’t put an age per se on treatment but usually look at the overall health of individual and any other health conditions. Hope all goes well well with any next steps needed. Let us know how you go. Laura, Moderator, BldderCancer.net
