My 84 year old father

He was urinating blood for approximately 2 years before he told anyone. Last week in May he called 911 due to excruciating pain in his lower back. Urologist removed a large tumor and cleaned one kidney...sent biopsy to pathologist. Came back as high grade invasive carcinoma foci to lympovascular invasion. All bladder walls had fragments of carcinoma.
Dad had 1 treatment in the hospital of mitomycin. Came home 4 days later
He has opted for no treatment due to his diabetes and that he has lost 42 lbs. in 2 months. He doesn't want to go back to the doctor or hospital but is experiencing pain in his lower back and tailbone. Hospice was called due to him not eating. Tylenol was given for pain but that only lasted for about 2 weeks, now he's on tramadol every 12 hours. I'm sure morphine will be next.
We don't know to expect from here.
How fast does this spread ?

  1. hi. Sorry you are your Dad are going through this. I am not medically trained and can’t comment on rate of spread. Is it worth your Dad speaking to his medical team about alternative treatment? Either way, I would ask his medical team what to expect. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    1. His medical team said with the most aggressive treatment he maybe has 5 years.
On the short end of it they said the tumor had been there a very long time and they have seen patients go as long as 2 years with no treatment.
Update....now on tramadol 3 times daily, lower back pain, tailbone pain, and severe pain in genitals. Tramadol will not last the full 8 hours between doses. Taking morphine to bridge the gap.

      1. I know it’s a hard decision for all involved when the patient decides not to have treatment. I hope they can keep his pain under control. You are all in my thoughts. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    2. @Stuccinan88 - My prayers to your father and your family. I am sure at his age and with his other health issues that this was not an easy choice for anyone involved. Hoping that he does have pain relief soon. I am sure that your support of him is so valuable and appreciated. You are in my thoughts Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can be of any support during this difficult time. Keep us updated. Linda Urbanski ( moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)
