My TURBT Experience

I had a TURBT in September 2022. My next two cystoscopies over the following six months were negative. I decided to be under sedation at my third cystoscopy. As luck would not have it, they found another tumor (even bigger this time then the very small one found and removed in September 2022). Since I was asleep, they took it out. Afterwards I had severe urinary retention which required four days in the hospital due to excruciating pain. A catheter was put in and taken out at various intervals over the next two weeks with three trips to the emergency room. It was a nightmare.

I am finally home resting fairly comfortable, but since I had a catheter in for so long the shaft and tip of my penis still feels irritated with a slight burning feeling. They had me on Flomax for a week but when I still couldn't pee they doubled my dose; finally I started peeing like a normal human being. So far, after 2 days at home, I still can't reach the clinic to ask if I should stay on Flomax. I have to pee like every 30- 45 minutes, it burns pretty badly. Nothing like the pain of retention but I am left wondering if the burning is normal.

Does anyone out there see any connection between marijuana and bladder cancer? I smoked tobacco off and on -- mostly off- for 40 years. I haven't smoked marijuana since the second TURBT and feel little urge to. Mostly between my two surgeries, I've enjoyed an occasional pat of canna butter in decaf coffee. But I've not had any of that for almost a month now.
I have found certain articles stating that marijuana might benefit the bladder. I don't know what to think, and I can't help but wonder why my bladder turned against me.

Anyone out there ever have 2 TURBTs and then no more for awhile? The surgery is not that bad but the recovery can be awful. Next time -- if there is one--I hope they keep me in the hospital to prevent that god awful bleeding and retention. Keep the faith.

  1. Hi you have been through a lot. I wish you were not dealing with these side effects. I found this article from one of our members with her experience cannabis: https://bladdercancer.net/living/cannabis-symptom-management. Many of our members have said they have had 2 TURBTs and then none for a while and some have said they needed to get more procedures done. I really hope you can get relief from all that you are going through. Jill (Team Member)
