NEO BLADDER LEAKING

I am 71 and entering my 5th month after having RC surgery and a neo bladder. I spoke to several men who had this surgery prior to doing it and all of them were dry. I have improved during the day dramatically. However, certain movements will cause a leak. I seem to leak more frequently come evening. During sleep I am completely incontinent. I am seeing a PT for pelvic floor training and kegels.
I hope and pray that some day I will be dry, it has caused me some depression. I am very active and still work full time in the real estate industry. Has anyone had a similar situation with their neo?

  1. @HOPEFULL - I am sorry to hear that you are not continent with your neo at this time. Hopefully others will reach out. Nick will reach out as he is a great resource and had his neo earlier this year. Let me see if I can find his recent article Linda Urbanski (moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

    1. Thank you

  2. hi. I have a urinary diversion but not a neobladder. Sorry to hear you are having a tough time. This might be useful to you. https://bladdercancer.net/living/neobladder-surgery-recovery Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    1. @HOPEFULL - I hope that your kegals etc work and you are not leaking soon. I am glad that you are happy with your diversion. I am a bag lady and have been for over 8 years and would not have chosen differently. Being happy with your choice is important but some people do not have the option for all diversions for various reasons and some end up with a different one than they might have preferred but are doing just fine. Being able to live a full and active live cancer free is the end goal for all of us and it seems that you are getting there. Keep us posted on how thing are going. My best to you. 4. - sorry to hear you are leaking at night. This is very common in neobladders for the first year, it will get better in time, have faith. I'm assuming you are a man since you commented that other men were dry. Pelvic Floor physical therapy rehabilitation is the key at this point. (Did you go before surgery?) Be sure to do your Kegel exercises multiple times a day - set an alarm if you need to. Also, ask for biofeedback to make sure you are doing it correctly, it's ingenious! During the day, void about every 4 hours (don't get overfull) be sure to completely empty your "neobladder" completely by leaning forward while seated on the toilet and pressing on your lower abdomen, (Crede' maneuver) sometimes it helps to even stand and sit again. Sorry, no more standing for you to pee 🙁 Or stand first and then sit to finish and completely empty. For nighttime, I would encourage you to limit your fluid intake after 7 pm for starters, especially alcohol or anything with caffeine. Hopefully, the Physical Therapy will help, give it time, wear pull-ups for now or consider using an external condom catheter to stay dry. Keep working and stay busy!!!
