Newly diagnosed

Hello, this is my first post as I try to figure out what the future holds for me. I'm 81 years old is reasonably good shape. I have been fighting prostate cancer since 2009. I had prostatectomy in 2009 and salvage radiation to the prostate bed in 2021. Recently I started seeing blood and blood clots in my urine. My urologist cauterized the bleeding area and took samples for a biopsy. The result came back as invasive Urothelial Carcinoma. There is smooth muscle invasion in one of the samples. After the cauterization the bleeding stopped for about 10 days but has recently returned. I'm to see a bladder specialist on Jan. 4th to get an evaluation and treatment options. I live in Austin Texas. Any suggestions and recommendations are appreciated.

  1. @old64horn - I am not a medical professional but it appears that your medical team is moving you along quickly to see exactly what treatment options you have. It was wise to not ignore the blood in your urine and find out a cause. I assume that you will see a urologist oncologist or similar with expertise in this area. I have. over the years of being on sites like this, learned that the treatment options vary. It is great that you are seeing someone so soon. And you have come to the right place for answers from those who have been or are currently being treated. I wish I could provide more help than just being supportive as my cancer was non invasive but I am sure that others will comment also. There are many of us out there who have gone through this cancer and made it to the other side cancer free. Please keep us updated on how you are doing and know that we are here for support always. 1. hi. I am glad you found us. We have a range of experience among us to share. I can’t give specific as I am not medically trained. I know there are a few others at least on here from Texas who may chime in. You may find this article a useful read https://bladdercancer.net/basics It is a good idea to write down any thoughts or questions as you have them. Then when you meet with your medical team, you can refer to this to get the information you need. Please let us know how you get on. Wishing you well. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

      1. Thank you for your welcome message. I'm anxious to learn from those who have traveled this journey.

        1. hope you manage to find some peace during the holidays and your appointment on the 4th brings some clarity. Urothelial Carcinoma is one of the most common bladder cancers. Staging will determine the correct treatment for you along with your own personal circumstances. Wishing you well and please keep in touch. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

      2. Thank you for your post. At this point, I can only share my experiences, share where I am in my current journey, and lift you up in prayer. I'm 58 years old and had TURBT procedure performed on 11/23/2022 (the day before Thanksgiving) to remove a non-invasive high-grade bladder cancer tumor. This past Tuesday, I had my first of six weekly mitomycin chemo treatments to help prevent recurrence; another cystoscopy to confirm that will be scheduled 2 months after the final treatment. This all started once I began to see blood in my urine in early September. I am reasonably healthy and have never smoked.

From what I've learned, the two most common treatments are a bladder resection (TURBT) followed by either BCG immunotherapy or Mitomycin chemotherapy infused locally into the bladder immediately after the procedure. The weekly follow-up includes six weeks of treatment or less frequent depending of varying factors.

The primary post-treatment side effect are temporary and include frequent urination, urgent urination, and a slight burning sensation while urinating (Tylenol and supplements bladder muscle relaxation meds can help with this).

Hope this helps. Please keep us posted of the status after your January appointment and I will be lifting you up in prayer.
