Recurrence of cancer after 3 Months
I had a low grade non invasive bladder cancer removed 3 months ago and now cystoscopy has found another tumour. Now awaiting for a TURBT to remove, grade and stage this tumour.
My questions are :
1. Is it normal for a recurrence as quickly as this.
2. Does this mean that I am more likely to get frequent recurrences.
3. How often does a recurring tumour return as high grade when previously it was low grade
@James1 - I am not a medical professional but know that bladder cancer can come back quickly) or possibly the growth was missed before??) I have read from others that some have started with low grade and with a reoccurrence it has been both low and high grade. I would try not to predict what has happened but wait for the staging to see if it is still low grade or if you have high grade also. Have you asked your doctor about this returning so quickly? This form of cancer can return and may do so with a vengeance so it is very important to stay vigilant with testing and follow up appointments. I am so sorry for your recent findings. I hope things progress well and smoothly for you! I am not a medical professional, just a nerdy caregiver.
I have found that high grade urothelial carcinoma has a pretty high recurrence rate. I think this is why urologic oncologists will often advocate for radical cystectomy. It seems to greatly improve outcome and survival rates when we get rid of the site where that type of cancer cell tends to recur.
A related fact is that urothelial cells line most of our urinary system, including kidneys and ureters.
