upcoming robotic surgery for ileal conduit

Diagnose with bladder cancer in November. completed 2nd turbt Jan 7th. 1st turbt they took out quite a bit of cancer, ta hg. @nd turbt they trimmed my enlarged prostrate and found more. It is a pretty fast moving cancer. They wanted to do bcg treatments but I declined due to the amount of cancer and did not want to go thru treatments only to probably fail (discussed with my Dr and she agreed). My bother has been on the bag for over 50 years so I am familiar with the problems etc (I also talked with him at length also). I am 75 and in pretty good health considering all my little problems (100% Va Disability).
My question is how long to recover from the surgery and any problems to look out for., they will be taking out my bladder and prostrate. This will be thru VA in Portland, Oregon but all my doctors come from OHSU Research Institue (good well recognized place).
Questions are: Anything I can do prior to surgery and what to expect after. Hoping for Feb 4th appointment if not will be 1st week of March. All help appreciated, thanks in advance.

  1. hi. I have had the operation but not robotically. That will definitely reduce the hospital stay and help with the recovery. I would take some loose fitting clothes/pyjamas to wear after the operation. It is a good eye to take an eye mask and ear plugs to help you sleep in the hospital. A longer cable to charge your phone is useful as plug point might be further away from your bed. You find you are very tired for a few months at least after the operation. Aw soon as you feel like, building up the amount you walk daily will help with recovery. No everyone likes a night bag but I recommend this especially initially. It means you don’t have ti get up in the night. Wishing you well. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    1. Thanks for the info, I used a night bag with a catheter before so no problem there

      1. that’s good you are used to the night bag already. Wishing you well. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

    2. hoe are you getting on? Did you get a date for your surgery? Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net

      1. Have a consultation with doctor on the 10th, should get date then, probably 1st week of March
