Acute Renal Failure - Metastatic Bladder Cancer

Hi everyone, my father is 76 years old and he had stage 1 bladder cancer in 2017 and he decided to remove his bladder (urostomy). We discovered that his cancer metastasized to his left kidney as well as formed a mass on his neck in December. So far, he had 2 cycles of gem/cis chemotherapy (last one 1/2😎. However, he ended up being hospitalized for kidney infection and sepsis on 2/2. He was discharged about a week after on 2/8 and was prescribed Cipro. When he got his bloodwork done on 2/17 as a follow up to his hospital stay, his creatinine level was at 4 (extremely high) and BUN was at 34 which resulted in another trip to the hospital. He's currently there now and the doctors are trying to figure out what caused his kidneys to fail. I am worried that his kidneys are/will be too weak to continue his chemo treatment. I am hoping that someone on this board has had experience that they can share. My father for the most part is okay aside from being generally weak from cancer. His other vitals are ok, urine output is good, and his electrolytes are within reasonable levels. But I worry that this is the beginning of the end.

  1. @susiej - I wish I was the person to provide positive information or at least some information to ease your mind. I have not been through what your father has and am not a medical professional but assume that you have confidence in your fathers medical team. I hope that the fact that his vitals are good and he is mainly experiences the normal weakness from chemo it is a good sign. I am sending prayers to both of you that good news is soon on the horizon. Please know that we are all thinking of you and sending positive thoughts. Please keep us updated on your fathers progress. My best. Linda ( moderator, Bladdercancer.net team member)

    1. So sorry you are going through so much and your father too. You father has lived with a urostomy and that right there shows strength. Like Linda, I can’t provide medical advice but I would say definitely ask his medical team about any questions or concerns. Sending you both all my positive vibes. 1. Thanks for checking in. My father is doing better. He’s been home for a few days and seems to have gained a little bit of his strength. He’s eating better too which is a huge relief. We’re just hoping that his kidneys slowly recover.

        1. I am so pleased. Glad he is doing well. Good luck with the appointment on Wednesday. Absolutely your posts will help others. Laura, Moderator, BladderCancer.net
