Surgery Choice

I’m a 68 year old male works out, runs and bikes. So healthy body weight and active. I was diagnosed with bladder cancer which penetrated into the muscle. PET scan found one lymph node and I had 5 rounds of Immunotherapy which seems to have worked well. No cancer found in the recent CT scan. My doctor at UT Southwestern in Dallas highly recommends bladder removal. I don’t like it but it sounds like the best approach to not having a reoccurrence.
What do yall recommend?
Neobladder? Is it the least problematic or are Urostomy pouches?

  1. Hi I am glad you reached out. I do hope our community members will respond here with their personal experiences. We are not medical professionals so I do not want to steer you in the wrong direction, but I would definitely encourage you to get a second opinion if you have any concerns. Also, make sure you get all the information from your doctors so that you can make a fully educated decision. Wishing you all the best. Please keep us posted. Jill (team member)

    1. After talking to a good friend who’s a doctor, I’m also considering not having the bladder removed. Which would mean quarterly cystoscope to examine the bladder walls. So far I am 6 months past having the tumors removed from the bladder and the recent scope was great. Do any of you all have experience with this?

      1. My brother had this surgery 4 wks ago. Please discuss with your Dr if they will remove your prostate too. Seems very common to remove both. Best wishes!
