Post TURBT Complications

Yesterday I had my second TURBT procedure and though initially was able to urinate with minimal bleeding and no clots. In the evening the bleeding in urine became significant (deep red) and with clot. Expelling the clot was when I noticed the difference between the previous urinations. Throughout the night this bleeding and expelling clots (some quite large - well beyond size of quarter).

My concern is that my first procedure resulted in clotting and eventual retention. Though a catheter relieved this temporarily, several hours later nothing was going into the bag… retention and extreme agony lasting hours. At emergency they had to pump out clots through a large catheter. I have never experienced such discomfort and suffering before.

I am very worried the same situation is developing. That first procedure had me with thoughts of if there was a cliff, I might have jumped.

Similar volume of heaving bleeding and clotting occurred prior to initial diagnosis and stopped in a couple of days and non existent before the first scope and discovery of the tumours. I am hoping this resolves in a similar fashion but worried and the apprehension is intense.

I know only early and no total retention again as of yet but already thinking if it doesn’t dissipate soon that upon resolution and BCG, I am already having thoughts to forgo further treatment if any future tumour is found. Perhaps this is short term thinking and duress. I don’t know.

  1. Hi I can understand your concern. What does your doctor suggest? I would definitely let them know what is going on and see what they think for next steps. I really hope you can get relief. Please keep us posted. Jill (Team Member)

    1. Yesterday the urine started to clear up and clotting diminished greatly. There is some discomfort but nothing that is unmanageable.

Perhaps my fear of going through what happened the first round overwhelmed and was causing panic. The past 2 days since the heavy bleeding started I drank water constantly to keep flushing everything and (at the insistence of partner) made sure there was very little physical activity with no bending down at all and consumed nothing except healthy options.

So, 3rd day in and feeling much more at ease. Apologies for being such a negative entry the other day.

      1. I am so glad to hear you are feeling better and more at ease. I can totally understand why you were nervous, no need to apologize. Please keep us posted with how things are going. Jill (Team Member)
